Secret Samana

Coastal Living magazine recently featured a spread about Samana. The Dominican Republic's northeastern peninsula is quickly becoming a hot spot for fabulous boutique hotels and raw, natural beauty.

The feature was written by Elizabeth Woodson and suggests you stay at the Balcones del Atlantico, rates starting at $399 on 100 acres with a half mile of beach. The resort blends with the surrounding area, no large walls that distract the view. There are 86 villas surrounded by manicured tropical gardens and pools with swim-up bars. Or you may try The Peninsula House, rates starting at $550 including breakfast. It is a much smaller boutique-style hotel, but no less luxurious.

She mentions the breathtaking waterfalls, some of the best in the country, Los Haitises National Park and even recommends you dine at Porto, which has one of the top wine lists in the Dominican Republic. It is located at Balcones del Atlantico. Also try Mi Corazon in Las Terrenas.

If you are in Santo Domingo the new toll road to Samana will get you there in about two hours. Now, the roads in town are still a work in progress, but the experience is well worth navigating the potholes.
