Shutting Down Again
The US Virgin Islands is “putting the brakes” on tourism, closing its doors to leisure visitors beginning Aug. 19 for a period of at least one month.
US Virgin Islands Governor Albert Bryan Jr announced the move, reverting the territory to a “Stay-at-Home” phase of its COVID-19 response for the next two weeks.
“The recent infiltration of the virus into our residential institutions that house vulnerable members of our population creates an alarming level of risk,” the Governor said. “This adds to the stress of the ongoing pandemic response that seemingly has no end in sight and is wearing out our health care and public safety infrastructure.”
Effective immediately, all hotels, villas, Airbnb accommodations and guest houses, charter vessels and similar businesses have been ordered not to accept or book any new reservations for a month.
Reservations are only being accepted for business travelers, flight crews, emergency personnel and government workers with written authorization from the government agency they are visiting.
Beginning Aug. 17 through Aug. 31, all restaurants can only offer takeout, delivery or drive-through, with all bars, nightclubs and cabarets closed.

St. Thomas Carnaval Goes Online
With the Carnival Virgin Islands postponed amid the coronavirus pandemic, the popular St Thomas festival is going virtual.
That means you can bring the rhythm of one of the Caribbean’s hottest carnivals right into your home.
The US Virgin Islands Department of Tourism’s Division of Festival has launched what it’s calling “Home Wuk,” a series of online social gatherings “designed to create a sense of community, camaraderie and a ‘virtual’ carnival experience.
Carnival Virgin Islands had been scheduled to run from April 3 through May 4.
“We know everyone was looking forward to Carnival, but postponing it was the right thing to do to make sure we help stop the virus from spreading,” said Ian Turnbull, Director of the Division of Festivals. “With the ‘Home Wuk’ series, we can lift people’s spirits and bring the U.S.V.I. Carnival vibe to everyone in the safety of their homes.”
The next “Home Wuk” party will be held on April 4 at 8PM. It’s a clever, creative initiative from the Division of Festivals, which launched last year in a bid to “enhance” the US Virgin Islands’ already strong festival ecosystem.

USVI Storm Recovery
With so much attention on Puerto Rico, let's have an update on the USVI:
Lieutenant Governor Osbert Potter, who is currently acting as governor, reported continued progress in the US Virgin Islands on the eve of the Thanksgiving holiday, with about 40 percent of the territory now re-energized.
Speaking on Wednesday, the acting governor expressed his gratitude to the people of the US Virgin Islands and the territory’s partners for continuing to rally around recovery efforts as life steadily returns to normalcy.
Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA) executive director Julio Rhymer reported about 40 percent of the territory has been re-energized, as WAPA and its partners continue to work towards their goal of 90 percent restoration by Christmas. Additional linemen arrived in the territory on Wednesday from the US mainland to support the re-energization efforts. More than 19,000 customers have been connected to date across the territory, Rhymer reported.

Real World St. Thomas
The current season of The Real World was filmed in beautiful St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. While the show is full of the usual antics and predictability of youth it does have nice eye candy as well. It is also great to see the diversity of the island and some of the culture it offers. I'm already planning a vacation.

US VIRGIN ISLANDS
St. Thomas is no longer the gay paradise it was in the 1960's and 70's, though it still offers visitors "alternatives" to the wild and crazy resort vacation.
Magens Bay is ranked one of the top 10 beaches in the world. Morning Star Beach, maybe because of difficult access, is known as a more liberal beach. It has young crowds, with many gays.
Activities include Coral World Marine Park with an 80,000 gallon coral reef tank. More recent island history includes Mountain Top for a famous banana daiquiri. This site has offered their legendary concoction of local rum, cane sugar and bananas since the 1960's.
St. Peter Greathouse and Botanical Gardens contains local art and over 200 kinds of West Indian trees and plants. Paradise Point Tramway takes you up a 700 foot peak over Charlotte Amalie (capitol of the USVI), offering views of the town, the island and the caribbean.
There are many gays and lesbians still drawn to St. Thomas, but attend mostly straight establishments, such as The Greenhouse. Much of the focus has shifted away from the capitol and onto Frenchtown, which has great restaurants and bars. St. Thomas has no real gay bars or clubs. Attitudes are tolerant and it is a great place to relax and enjoy a great caribbean experience.
Accomodations include: Treetops, a gay owned rental villa with awesome panoramas. Danish Chalet Inn, an intimate and gay-friendly guesthouse with a fantastic view of the harbor. Bolongo Bay Beach Resort is quite gay-friendly and has an all-inclusive option.
St. Croix seems to be the new gay destination. There is quite a selection of accomodations for the gay traveler. Villa Greenleaf is a gay owned bed & breakfast. All of its rooms have incredible caribbean views.
Sand Castle On The Beach is a lesbian owned resort hotel on the beach. It has 2 pools, one is clothing optional. The phone number is 1-800-524-2018.
Birds Of Paradise, a gay-friendly vacation rental villa in Christiansted, has secluded lodging with stunning seaviews.
Five miles west of Christiansted is the renown Cormorant Beach Club Hotel (now the Palms At Pelican Cove), where some 1,200 feet of white sand shaded by palm trees attracts a large gay crowd. Because a reef lies just off shore, snorkeling conditions are ideal. The hotel is more diverse since a straight person bought it, but continues to have many gay tourists. They even offer committment ceremonies.
For more adventuresome beaches try Cramers Park. This is where the locals spend time, especially on Sundays. Also visit Jacks Beach, there is a nude section at this scenic spot.
For nightlife you may venture into any number of clubs and bars. Remember, attitudes are relaxed and tolerant. If you want gay-specific then Club Reflection is for you. There is live entertainment three nights a week and there is a beachfront restaurant. It is located in Frederiksted in a pink gingerbread house. Just look for the rainbow flag!
