Spring Break Fantasy

I was not remotely interested in taking this cruise for spring break. The last thing I wanted was to be a 30 year-old professional surrounded by a bunch of college students gone wild. I reluctantly gave in when my friend reminded me I owed him a birthday trip since he vacationed with me on my 30th birthday.

I felt sure the only pleasure I would get from the trip was the day-long dock at Wayfarers Cay, our second port of call. It's a private island off the shore of Puerto Rico. While most travelers would be interested in the beach activities, I would be adventuring to the North Coast with its cliffs and wildlife. Not a huge attraction for the college-aged bunch I was cruising with.

The first couple of nights were pretty uneventful, toga party and pajama party. I returned to my bed early on both nights. I was trying to catch up on my sleep. Not just because of the different time zones, but I had also been having this strange dream. In the dream I was lost on a deserted island, I would find my way to shore and just before I would dive into the sea to swim to what I hoped would be safety a man would stand in my way. He appeared to be what perhaps was the last of the native inhabitants, possibly cannibal. I would awake before discovering my fate.

That next day we docked at Wayfarers Cay and I set out on my adventure. My friend, who is 5 years younger than I, decided to hang at the beach with the wild bunch. I was about 3 hours into my trek when I felt a bit overcome by the heat. I looked around, but everything appeared the same. It was jungle and sky everywhere. I thought I heard the sound of water and walked toward it.

As I approached the shoreline with its awesome cliffs I noticed someone who appeared to be sunbathing. When I moved closer to the figure I heard quiet chanting and saw the guy was nude. I immediately thought of my dream and panicked. I turned to retreat, but the sound of a breaking twig got his attention just as I twisted my ankle. When I looked up I stared into the face of the man from my dream, he had the same cat-that-ate-the-canary grin.
