Much Ado About...

...New Year in Santo Domingo!
If you're in the Dominican Republic for the holiday you may want to take advantage of this information from dr1:

Starting at 10pm, leading Dominican bands will perform, including Hector Acosta (El Torito), Jose Alberto (El Canario), Tono Rosario, Rubby Perez, Jose Pena Suazo, Frank Reyes and El Chaval de la Bachata. Other parties are planned for Hotel Jaragua's Salon La Fiesta, where Fernando Villalona, Hector Acosta, Omega, Elvis Martinez and Pochy Familia will take the stage as of 10pm. Hotel Melia Santo Domingo has its Fiesta del 31 for RD$1,000 and RD$1,500 on the Malecon. The Malecon Center on Avenida George Washington is advertising an electronic music party with French DJ Bob Sinclar, accompanied by leading local DJs. Shipwreck Identified

Associated Press reports:
Marine archaeologists have found the remains of a slave ship wrecked off the Turks and Caicos Islands, an accident that set free the ancestors of many current residents of those islands.
Some 192 Africans survived the sinking of the Spanish ship Trouvadore off the British-ruled islands, where the slave trade was banned.
The ship had been forgotten, so when the discovery connected the ship to current residents the first response "was a kind of shock," said researcher Don Keith.
"The people of the Turks and Caicos have a direct line to this dramatic, historic event- it's how so many of them ended up being here," he said.
The team was able to determine that authorities on the islands apprenticed the Africans to trades for a year and then allowed them to settle on the islands, many on Grand Turk. The ships Spanish crew was arrested and turned over to authorities in Cuba, then a Spanish colony.

New Port Inaugurated

dr1 reports:
Santo Domingo's Sans Souci Tourist Port is ready for its January 2009 inauguration. The first phase, the Don Diego port has been remodeled and a new terminal was built on the eastern side. The port project also includes the dredging of the Ozama River in order to accommodate the large cruise ships that call at Santo Domingo. Sans Souci Port Executive Director Luis Molina told Listin Diario that when the Don Diego port operation began in 2006, they received 40,000 cruise ship passengers in that first year. The 2007-2008 season has ended with more than twice that number, 82,000. He forecast that the 2008-2009 season would bring 125,000 passengers. Work on the port continues and the plans are for capacity to receive 9,000 cruise ship passengers per day. The next phase involves the relocation of the Navy Base in order to prepare the way for high rises, a project that will change the Santo Domingo skyline, with 2,500 units planned. The master plan consists of mixed residential and commercial use, starting by mid-2010. "We want to develop Sans Souci as an entertainment venue within Santo Domingo," he said. A large open commercial plaza will host restaurants, and a 1,000-seat amphitheater is also planned. "The idea is to create a walkable part of the city. Avenida Espana will border the project, becoming a well-lit boulevard with kiosks.

Shrinking Beaches

So you like the beach? Here's a call to action.

Associated Press reports that sand along some of the caribbeans beaches is disappearing at alarming rates as theives feed a local construction boom. The sand is favored in creating smooth surfaces for plastering and finishing and is being hauled off by the truckload late at night.

Some towns and areas are now exposed to tidal surges and rough seas. Among the hardest hit is Grenada, where officials are building a US $1.2 million dollar seawall to protect the 131 suare-mile island.

One of the regions largest sand thefts targeted Jamaica, where nearly 100 truckloads were swiped from private property in the northwest, exposing protected mangroves and a limestone forest to wind and waves. Police have refused to comment.

Joseph Gilbert, minister of works and environment in Grenada, says "If we continue to mine the beaches the way we've been doing, we will have no sand to boast about. Just sea and sun."

IRAN AGAIN

Iran and I were in the park having lunch while deciding what to do for our second anniversary. Just as we were about to return to the office a gentlemen approached and handed Iran his card. He was a talent scout for a popular gay magazine here in Brazil. He had originally seen us together last year, but was unable to approach us at the time.

After making a telephone call he offered to fly Iran and I to Rio for a week to do a photoshoot. There was no need to think it over because the dates would coincide with our anniversary. How awesome that is! I looked at Iran to see if he had any doubts, since he was to be the "new discovery." He was cool and confident and gave me an I can't wait look. (He seems to have exhibitionist tendencies anyway.)

We had a great time in Rio and everyone at the studio said this is sure to be one of the hottest issues.

A NEW DAY

"Change has come to America" was the theme of his acceptance speech. As Barack Obama prepares to take office as the next president of the United States people around the world are sharing in the hope that he expresses for our country. Many continue to view the US as the land of opportunity but began to question whether we could ever extend opportunities to all people. The resounding answer, as evident by this election, is YES WE CAN.

Out Inside Jamaica

Here is an inside perspective on what it is like to be gay in Jamaica. A young Jamaican cop tells his story. This video was found on GBMNews. They have news, reviews and commentary for gay people of color. There are many categories to browse, including one on Jamaica. They advocate boycotting the island; travel, music and goods. Is that a bit extreme?
