Carnaval 500

The Santo Domingo Carnival begins this Sunday afternoon, 8 February 2015 along Maximo Gomez Avenue, filling the street with color and joy.

This year Santo Domingo is celebrating the 500th anniversary of the first carnival in the Americas. The city government says that the first ever carnival was held in 1515, just 23 years after the European settlement in 1492.

The 2015 Santo Domingo Carnival celebrations are scheduled for Sunday, 8 February 2015 and will continue for two more Sundays (15, 22 February) along Maximo Gomez Avenue from 3 to 7pm. This year the National District (ADN) city council has ordered the parade area to be extended to 1.1 km for the 116 troupes and characters that will be parading along the Maximo Gomez Avenue between Jose Contreras Avenue and the Malecon, or George Washington Ave. The prize money for the best groups will come to some RD $900,000.
