On The Rise

The death rate from dengue in the D.R. has been higher in the first half of 2010 that at any time over the past four years.

By the course that dengue has taken, and taking into consideration the fact that the disease, declared an epidemic by the Dominican Medical Association, has still not reached the critical point that usually occurs between the months of August & September, there will be a large number of cases and fatalities.

When traveling it would be wise to know how to avoid dengue fever.

JetBlue is joining other carriers offering onboard food for sale. Five new snack boxes will go for $6 each. The snack boxes will be available on flights longer than three hours & 45 minutes. There will still be free snacks on every flight.

It is reported that May travel was up at major commercial airports- a likely indication that the cash crunch many people and famililies were facing last year has eased and summer vacations are back! So, where are YOU going this summer?

Captured!

from the Jamaica Gleaner:
Sporting an old-fashioned afro wig, black hat and a dated pair of round-rimmed glasses, Christopher "Dudus" Coke, alleged notorious drug lord and gangster, looked nothing like royalty or feared gang leader when he was captured by the police on last Tuesday.

At the time of his capture he was riding in the company of popular pastor Al Miller, who is well known for handing over persons wanted by the police. He was also in one of his many disguises that helped him elude authorities for so long.

Coke is currently on remand in a federal state facility in New York after pleading not guilty to drug and gun-trafficking charges on Friday. He is kept in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day. If convicted Coke faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Retire On Social Security?

US News & World Report:

One of the most compelling reasons to consider retiring to another country is the opportunity to reduce your cost of living, maybe dramatically.

The average Social Security check is about $1200US. You can receive that payment while living anywhere in the world. In some countries you can even have your check direct-deposited into your local bank account there. Here are a few of the Top Five places.

Boquete, Panama because Panama offers user-friendly options for foreign residency. Resident retirees receive a long list of benefits including discounts on everything from prescription medicines and in-country air travel to closing costs on the purchase of real estate.

Granada, Nicaragua is a charming Spanish-colonial city built around a beautiful and lively central square. It's also home to a welcoming community of expat retirees enjoying new lives in this land of lakes and volcanoes. You could live well in Granada for about $900 per month.

In Cuenca, Ecuador the average Social Security check ($1200) could also buy you a pleasant new life. The city has an established community of expats who will welcome you and help you with your transition. The other big plus for Cuenca is its climate. Ecuador is a land of eternal springtime, never too hot and never too cold.
